A wonderful Mothers Day not to be challenged

Sunday was not our first dining experience at KBH but the best one we've experienced! Seems KBH pulled all the stops and set up an event that every Mother would thoroughly enjoy. From Alaka'i Paleka, to the live band, to the hula dancers, to the fashion show, to the extensive and great quality line up of food, and to the wonderful service provided by KBH staff, we had such a good time.

One of my pets, Snowy Cat, passed away Saturday morning and I had been very, very sad. At your Brunch, I was so impressed, I felt so much better. When we arrived back home, we kept talking about what a fantastic job KBH did for this year's Mothers Day Champagne Brunch and I didn't even drink champagne because I don't drink. The champagne was but a small part of the fabulous feast KBH laid out. We were very impressed with the obvious 'spare no expense' philosophy that permeated this onolicious event.

Thank you, KBH, for helping me to recover from the loss of my precious pet. Instead of my mind being preoccupied with the loss of my pet, my mind is preoccupied with how wonderful Mothers Day was at KBH. Mahalo, Tim, for making my Mothers Day an event to remember.

Meadow Gold Dairies Announces Winners of the 7^th Annual Milk Carton Regatta

Kahului, Maui (April 24, 2011) Meadow Gold Dairies is proud to announce the winners of the 7th annual Maui Meadow Gold Milk Carton Regatta. The event was held on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Hanakao`o Beach Park (Canoe Beach) in Lahaina, Maui. Eighteen boats and 12 schools participated in this free educational event. Alakai Paleka the Morning Goddess on KPOA 93.5 was the event mistress of ceremony.

Schools were given points for the fastest time, most creative boat design and spirit competition. The overall winners for the regatta received prizes of $500 and $250 Office Max gift cards and Meadow Gold Ice Cream parties. The Overall Winners are:

Race time: 1.33, Overall score 42 points

Aloha! My brother, Jeff, and I visited beautiful Maui to celebrate my 50th birthday in June 2009. We listened to your show every morning and greeted eachother each day with "What is TODAY???" We have such fond memories of our trip and our wonderful excursions around the island, all the while listening to YOU on the radio. Sometimes I will call him and pretend that I am you, but I could never duplicate your beautiful voice. A funny "Hawaiian" story from Oregon.

Good morning my friend!

So, my son Jon and I were going to watch Hawaii 5-0 last night on DVR (It's one of our favorite shows) When I go out to our garage refrigerator and pick up 2 Hawaiian Sun "fruit Punch" flavored drinks. Of course, you can't really find Hawaiian Sun drinks here but when we were in Maui last June, I bought a 6 pack of my favorite which is the fruit punch flavor one.

Jon still has a "Orange Mango" can left from our trip as well and he shared with me something I didn't know… He said "Dad, thanks for the offer to drink one of your Hawaiian Sun's, but I won't drink one till I have a ticket to Maui in my hand. I made that promise to myself when I got down to only 1 can left." I smiled and said… "okay son, I hope you go soon because I don't think the drinks inside those cans last a long time!"

He is so funny. I have 4 cans left of Fruit punch so I'll have another one in a month or so… but I had no idea he had the idea of waiting till he could go back!!

I have tried a few pen pal sites but no response. Maybe it is just a dream, to find a friend who would know about the islands, and the places I would like to revisit in my mind. I was hoping you might know someone around my age of 62, or older or younger, it doesn't matter.

I had a wonderful friend, who I wrote to for a few years after my return to the mainland. He lived on the Big Island and was one of my tour guides. He died a few years later, but while he was in my life, it was a pleasure to know him. He was in his 70's back then when I was in my 30's.

I loved Lahaina, and walking the shops on Front Street. We swam in the Seven Pools, and toured the whole island. What a beautiful place. I took a lot of pictures with my little –then—Kodak Brownie Camera. The pictures are faded, but the memories are fresh. I wish I had bought postcards!!

The storm has passed more quickly than expected so we received less snow than the prediction. That's fine with me - less shoveling to do.

A cloud band in the east this Christmas Eve morning coaxed me outside to record the possible spectacular sunrise. Alas the sunrise did not materialize, but the Peaks were spectacular with the fresh blanket of snow.

I am blessed to be a KPOA Ohana member, from the cultural revelations of Luana Kawa'a's Morning mana`o to Sista Val's Hawaiian Moon Calendar and most definitely knowing such an endearing personality that I can call my friend, the Morning Goddess for the past 26 years serving up the ono Hawaiian Music and Motivational MOOments-what else is there? I know- it's those games and contest that we get to play throughout the year-oh my God so good fun. Thank you for the romantic "Kula Lavender" picnic experience that my hubby and I cannot stop raving about, the Mother's Day brunch at KBH the ladies of my ohana enjoyed with Melveen and the fun my dad and the men of this family had when Willie K hosted Father's Day. We enjoyed the Thanksgiving feast from Bernard's Bento's & Banquets and picked up the Marquesa prawns from Buzz's Wharf on the 4th of July, from Round Table Pizzas to the live remotes with Uncle Boy at 5A rent a space, spinning wheel for free stuff, and the chance to hit the jackpot in Vegas. Twenty six years worth of blessings have passed through my household directly from the KPOA airwaves and we continue to receive these blessings. Mahalo KPOA.

Schultz Fire Update

Let me start with a couple of impressive pictures I have 'borrowed' from a friend of a friend:

I wish I could give proper photo credits for these amazing shots but I have not been able to learn the name of the photographer. This is as bad as it gets, folks; but look closer. Those dark shapes rising above the fire are the summits of the San Francisco Peaks; the fire is on the foothills in the foreground. (The picture was shot from somewhere in the Doney Park area several days ago.) In fact the Peaks have survived nearly intact!

The latest report is that 15,000 acres (about 23.5 square miles) have burned - the same number they have been reporting for a couple of days now - and the fire is 75% contained with full containment expected in about 3 days. The effort has involved nearly 1000 firefighters working under a Type One Incident Team and a pair of Sikorsky Skycranes (huge helicopters) have been shuttling water to the Peaks for over a week. Total cost is now said to be $8,000,000. Some credit also goes to the more moderate than expected winds.

Let me take this opportunity to post two of my pictures from June 24:

This is the massive smoke plume from an intentional back fire, which they started then to avoid the higher winds expected the following day. It is good that they shared that with the media or we might have concluded that it was all over!

This is the same slope I photographed on the previous evening and sent in my last update. As you can see things got a lot hotter here!

Barring unforeseen happenings it is all over but the search for the person who started it. I'm not worried; a friend who drove past the site when they were still there reports that there were several cars and trucks at that campsite. That is too many people to keep a secret. The Forest Service is offering a modest reward ($2500, I think) and a local brewery has offered free beer for life to sweeten the deal.

Our grateful thanks to all the firefighters who worked so hard to save the Peaks!

Good Morning Alaka'i,

I live in Oklahoma City and work 3 days a week for my wonderful son... we listen to KPOA in the office... it has become my "comfort food". The music is wonderful... YOU ARE A RIOT!!! He has sung the "morning song" & "aloha friday song" to his kids for years, and now I find myself counting down until they play. I even have my daughter in Idaho tuning in on Friday morning so my grandkids there can dance to "aloha friday" before my grandson goes off to kindergarden.

Here is my request.... this Friday... May 21st, my son and family will fly from OK to Idaho for a visit. I told him I am going to request that give a birthday shout out to my daughter... who has a birthday today... May 17... she will certainly be overcome with joy !! It's his job to get the computer up and on so she will hear it. What he doesn't know... I would like to include him in the shout out too.. his birthday will be just a couple weeks later.... June 10. SOOO PLEEEEAASSEEE ALAKA'I... would you please mention my keiki's... wishing them a very happy birthday from their Oklahoma Ma Kua .... It will bless me so much to know that my babies and grandbabies are all dancing to "aloha friday" while I'm listening too.

Los Angeles – Hana Hou for the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series! At the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, their CD, Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2, received the Grammy Award for Best Hawaiian Music Album. The five compilation CDs produced by the renowned weekly Maui show have now been honored with five nominations and four Grammy Awards. Today, CD producers Paul Konwiser and Wayne Wong, producer/artists Daniel Ho and George Kahumoku, Jr., and artist Jeff Peterson came up on stage to accept the award in Los Angeles. They are deeply honored to receive this award again. The pre-televised awards were streamed live today on the grammy.com site, and the presentation will be available for viewing for one month.

Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2is a compilation of live performances from weekly concerts (going on for seven years now) at the Napili Kai Beach Resort. Featured on the CD are master slack key artists George Kahumoku Jr., Dennis Kamakahi, Jeff Peterson, Owana Salazar, Sonny Lim, Keoki Kahumoku, Kawika Kahiapo, and Daniel Ho; with special guests falsetto legend, Richard Ho'opi'i, and lap steel great, Bobby Ingano. Also included are the young next-generation nephews and show regulars Peter DeAquino and Sterling Seaton.

On Friday, January 29th, prior to the awards, George Kahumoku, Jr. hosted an educational program with Los Angeles area high school students in the morning. Later that evening all of the Hawaiian Grammy nominees performed at the Grammy Museum.

Yesterday was a full day of events. We had a special morning presentation with Leutzinger high school from the LA area at the Grammy Museum on Figuora St in downtown LA. Dean Pitchford, a 1968 St Louis HS grad shared a DVD video presentation that included songs he wrote the lyrics to, such as Footloose, Bambi, Lady & the Tramp & many many others. Then I came on with Daniel Ho and did my original song called Ho'okupu about Pele & Kamapua'a from our Grammy nominated CD Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Vol 2, and we had the whole roomful of high schoolers singing and grunting & making pig noises. We then did Aunty Edith Kanakaole's Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai (the Seaweed Limu) song which was danced by 19 year old Puanani Edgar, one of my hanai nieces from Ventura CA. Then Daniel Ho & I did a version of my mosquito song that brought the house down! Next up were Tia Carrere and Daniel Ho with Amy Stillwell, and they did 3 songs from their Grammy Nominated Album, He Nani! The event ended with everyone joining hands & singing Hawaii Aloha.

We then broke for lunch, waited in line with Beyonce's personal assistant for our Grammy tickets & then Paul Konwiser, Sandy Wales, and I had lunch at the Farm of Beverly Hills with Javier Cano who was the CEO heading the Grammy LA District's newest Ritz-Carlton skyscraper building project. Mr. Cano was the GM @ the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua where the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series started over 7 years ago!

The evening event at the Grammy Museum featured all Four Hawaiian category Grammy nominees, myself, George Kahumoku, Jr & Daniel Ho, and Jeff Peterson performed from our Grammy Nominated Masters of Hawaiian Slack key Guitar Vol 2. Then Daniel Ho & Tia Carrere showcased their CD, He Nani. Manu Boyd and Glen Smith from Ho'okena performed as a Duet, and Amy Gilliom finished the night off with her brother Eric, & John Cruz, taking turns singing duets backed by her guitarists Chino Madera and Jeff Peterson. – George Kahumoku Jr

I thought I heard wrong yesterday and then I heard your morning news about Mr. Lindsey. Please send my aloha to his ohana and can you play the song that goes "e alu like mai ka kou, e na o'iwi o Hawaii na pua mai ole". I know that it's not a sad song or may not seem appropriate, but it's the song that he had us sing for our Na Mele O Maui Competition when we were in the 8th grade at Iao School in 1988 (21 years ago OMG!). I still remember that, but I don't know what place we came in! I have so many awesome memories of that year because of all the activities that he made possible for us!

Reminiscing my 8th grade year, again, in 1988. He took us to the Kaanapali Beach Hotel to put on Hawaiian displays for the tourists like Ti-leaf lei making, poi pounding, ukulele playing, flower lei & haku lei making, and simple hula lessons. We had so much fun, but the best was the bus ride there and back. That was when everybody found out that Billy Kekona & Rodney Keahi (aka Rod da Fiyah) could sing. I remember all of us on the bus hearing people singing and everybody got quiet. We looked in the back of the bus and there they were…Billy with his little ukulele, and for a moment, it was like….they forgot themselves and was just singing away & I know that everybody was thinking "WOW". And Mr. Lindsey sat in the front of the bus with a great big smile on his face like he just took a great big breath of fresh air.

And that's my memory of Mr. Lindsey! Thank you akua for blessing us with his knowledge and care!

From the Maui News: Edwin "Ed" Lindsey Jr., "a steadfast champion and leader in protecting Maui's aina and its important cultural landscapes," died Wednesday morning at his family residence in Lahaina. He was 70.

The Maui County Council honored Lindsey in May with a ceremonial resolution as a "beloved Maui treasure" who served in numerous roles, including kumu, kupuna, uncle, tutu, brother, dad and husband.

Auntie Patty Nishiyama of Na Kapuna O Maui, an organization of Hawaiian elders she actively participated in with Lindsey, described him as "a warrior, a strong warrior."

"He will be missed," Nishiyama said.

Lindsey was a founding member of Hui O Wa'a Kaulua, an organization with activities including the building of a sailing canoe, Mo'olele. He also was president of the Ohana Coalition, organizer of Kilakila O Haleakala, co-founder of the Maui Nui Marine Resources Council, member of Na Kupuna O Maui and a participant in the Kaanapali 2020 planning process.

Lindsey spearheaded ongoing native habitat restoration projects such as Malama Honokowai Valley, Malama Ukumehame and Malama Kaheawa-Hanaula.

Boy Kana'e

The premier of the new Hawaiian Music Series was awesome. The KPOA studios were flooded with phone inquiries..........It's raining, is it going to happen? Of course it is was our reply and it did happen. Let me explain that KPOA now lives in Kahului in Central Maui where it rains more. It drizzled a little bit in Lahaina in the morning, but that was a Hawaiian blessing. Our west side Ohana knew better and showed up in droves.

WHO ELSE COULD DO THE PREMIERE EDITION, BUT.... our own Willie "Willie K" Kahaiali'i . He was the perfect Hawaiian Man, taking pictures with the keiki, being his excellent self, and don't get me started on his musical prowess. Mahalo nui loa....Willie K and ohana.

This exciting new Lahaina event is free and will be held on the second Thursday of the month from 11:00am-12:30pm on the Baldwin Home Museum lawn. Presented by Lahaina Restoration Foundation, the 10 month program will be hosted by Allen Pokipala "Braddah Poki" of Pacific Radio Group.

Mahalo nui loa e Alaka'i you Morning Goddess you,

I had a wonderful wonderful time at the Jake Shimabukuro show. First
time I see him in person, live on stage... I gave my two free tickets
to my grand-son and hanai son. I bought my ticket and chose to sit
upstairs on the MEZZ row B-24. of course never had room down there,
was all full up... OMG he was sososo good, especially his piano guy,
the drummer I fell in love with and the bass guy. What a team, even
the lighting guy who displayed the whole stage with such brilliant
colors according to the tunes of all those guys...ho even the sound
systems guy, What a show! ! I will always cherish.

I am so grateful with the couple who sat next to me. They clued me in
about Jake because they saw his shows before but first time they saw
his new team (piano, drummer, and bass)
They were awesome.

Traveling from Hana, Maui, one of the most remote towns of the United States, Leokane Pryor joined Washington DC's Aloha Boys Sunday night at a private event hosted by AOL founder Steve Case and his wife Jean in the exclusive Dupont Circle area of Washington DC where the President Elect's sister Maya Soetoro-Ng, her husband Conrad and schoolmates of Barack Obama were serenaded with traditional Hawaiian music by Leokane Pryor and The Aloha Boys of Washington, DC (Isaac Ho'opi'i, Irv Queja & Glen Hirabayashi).

The evening embodied the Aloha spirit of the Islands, providing a touchstone to where the President Elect spent his youth. The event, was attended by 200 guests and included many longtime friends and former classmates of the President Elect. It was a celebration of his tremendous victory, Hawaiian style. Leokane, also a graduate of Punahou, was three years behind The President Elect in school, but remembers "Barry" (as he was known then) as being "a nice guy that everyone liked, with a great smile".

Headlining the entertainment, Leokane and the Aloha boys provided traditional Hawaiian Music along with Hula dancing by Kikilia Fordham Schaefer and Rebecca Ramos (former schoolmates of the President-Elect) and fresh flower Lei shipped in from the islands. Leokane is one of the Mountain Apple Company's newest and brightest musicians. His recently released CD, Home Malanai, has been on Billboard Magazines World Chart and named one of the top five CDs of the year by the Honolulu Advertiser and Hawaii Magazine. Leokane was honored to be invited to perform at the event; "A couple days ago I was sitting on the beach in Hana and wondering if I would really be playing in Washington D.C., and now, here I am in the freezing cold and it really happened! it was a great honor to travel the 52 hairpin turns on the road from Hana, fly 6,000 miles to be a part of this historic event."

Leokane is hopeful that by sharing Hawaiian music during this momentous time in our nation's history, a new interest in Hawaii, its music and its beauty will spread through the country (and world). Michelle Obama is quoted as saying "to understand Barack, you need to understand Hawaii". Like Barack Obama, Leokane's childhood was influenced by the many ethnicities of Hawaii. This unique upbringing allows Leokane to be an ambassador not only for the State of Hawaii and its unique music, but also it's rich cultural values. He is a strong proponent of the environment, working toward preservation of Native Hawaiian plants and animals. Perhaps some of these are the values that Michelle Obama refers to.

Leokane will also be performing with the Aloha Boys at the Hawaii State Society Inaugural Ball this Tuesday, January 20th.

Have you ever seen pictures of yourself as a child? Surrounded by your cousins? I have and it's usually my cousin Maile, second from the right and still claims I was the most beautiful baby she had ever seen..... or my cousin Linda holding me. I don't remember anybody pinching me and I remember them fondly. My other cousin, Linda Bernice Hoohieikananionapua Salvador Kahuhu passed many a little over 10 years ago. It's her birthday today, so some of the Paleka girls, and my son. the photographer got in the car and went to visit her and sing Happy Birthday. She was 11 years and 11 days older than me and being the second oldest cousin of 33 children took the concept of sharing very seriously. She would take the package of cookies or whatever we needed to share and carefully count out, one for you, one for you, and if there were any leftovers, she took a survey and divide, as best she could the rest evenly. While we were there we also paid tribute to the 13 other graves at the Makawao Veteran's Cemetary. Then we decided to go visit our baby time stomping grounds, Hookipa Park, Baldwin Park and Paia Town. Of course we had to stop by Kuau Mart and snack. They got the best hot dogs in town. If you have the time today or soon, remember those who aren't with us anymore. Say a silent thank you for the good times and lessons learned. Try to pass their goodness on to others.

Aloha my friends! I read about the passing of Uncle Boy. I want to
express my condolences to all of you for the loss of a great guy. I
remembered listening to him back in 2000 and heard Uncle Boy for the first
time. He had so much life and energy. It's hard to believe that he is no
longer with us. He is with us in spirit! I want you all to know that I feel
your pain as well. The best thing we can all do is stay strong. God Bless

Boy Kana'e Obituary: Honolulu Advertiser

I'd like to thank Christie Wilson for doing such a great job.

KAHULUI, Maui — Hawaiian music radio deejay Henry "Boy" Kana'e died Monday at Maui Memorial Medical Center after being found unconscious at his Kahului home by a family member. He was 55.

Kana'e, known on air as the "Hawaiian Supaman," hosted a show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays on Pacific Radio Group's KPOA 93.5 FM and was a popular emcee at community events.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

Co-workers became concerned when Kana'e did not show up for his show Monday and they alerted family members, according to KPOA program director and deejay Alaka'i Paleka.

Kana'e died at about 5 p.m. at the hospital. The cause of death was not immediately known, but daughter Jazre Sunia said he suffered from health problems and "was tired."

Kana'e joined KPOA in 1994. He also served as cultural adviser to Maui Fest Hawaii and was an associate pastor with Harvest Chapel, Church of God.

Paleka said Kana'e had a large following of Internet listeners on the Mainland and projected an upbeat outlook on life and the sometimes grim news reports from around the world. "He had a way of making it seem like it's going to be OK," she said.

"He was just the epitome of a Hawaiian man. He had so much aloha for everybody," she said. "Whenever you were down, his kahu side came out. He often talked me down."

She also described Kana'e as "a mischievous character" who enjoyed pranks. Paleka said his favorite holiday was April Fools Day. She recalled a recent April 1 when he secretly placed barriers to block off the area around the radio station's Ano Street office and studio and told co-workers the county was resurfacing the roadway.

Kana'e was born Oct. 27, 1953, in Kula, Maui. He attended Maui and Lahainaluna high schools before graduating from Moloka'i High. Among his many community activities was an annual walk on Moloka'i for the American Cancer Society that he organized in memory of his late wife, Sharon.

As an associate pastor, he performed many weddings, including officiating at Sunia's wedding two weeks ago.

"He was always laughing and had a positive attitude even when things were going down," she said.

"He always used to say, 'If nothing ever goes right, take it to the left because the left is where your heart is, and your heart is love, and love is God, and God will set you free.'"

Kana'e is additionally survived by his mother, Yvonne; a son, Leighton; another daughter, Sherise; brothers, Garrick, Clayton, Clarence and Nathan; and five grandchildren.

Keali'i Reichel: Kukahi

It's Kukahi weekend 2008. Keali'i Reichel's awesome concert series at
the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. This year the secret special
guests will be Weldon Kekauoha and Maui's own Napua Greig. It is
always a privilidge to emcee this event because I love working with
his crew. Joe Arias makes sure Keali'i's vision comes to life on
stage, everything goes according to split second timing. Interesting
story today kids. Picture this: 2007, Keali'i's on stage, his gold
record is here, it needs to be presented, Jack Johnson is not
available, who's going to do it. I waited patiently in the shadows,
hoping that somebody would realize that Alaka'i could do it. Finally,
they ask me, so I run, okay fast walk to my dressing room, which is
beautiful by the way, grab my brand new digital camera, which I don't
really know how to operate and walk on to the stage right after the
first half is complete. I call Keali'i back on to the stage and after
much frivolity, present his gold record for Kawaipunahele. I'm
thinking this is my opportune time to take the world's first picture
of Hawaii's third artist to receive a gold record. Snap. Flash. Check.
Oh no, it's in black and white. Snap. Flash.Check. It's still in black
and white. Oh No. What have I done.
